WLP Winter Appeal: Nicole's Story

Recently, a woman named Nicole came to Women’s Lunch Place after losing her job as the manager of a local restaurant. She injured her back in a car accident and was unable to work. No longer able to perform the manual labor tasks that were once routine for her, the restaurant owner was forced to let Nicole go.

Suddenly, there was a mountain of new tasks in front of her: doctors’ appointments, treatments for the pain, applying for unemployment and disability, finding a new job, and figuring out a way to pay the rent in the meantime.

The WLP guest pictured above is not Nicole.

Quickly, Nicole was overwhelmed. A growing pile of unpaid bills began to accumulate on her kitchen counter. Before long, she was evicted and found herself spending nights at a local overnight shelter. Since overnight facilities are closed during the day, Nicole didn’t know where to turn for help. A shelter staff member referred her to Women’s Lunch Place.

When she arrived at WLP, Nicole ate a nutritious breakfast––yogurt parfait with granola and fresh fruit, a whole-grain muffin––and sat down with a hot cup of coffee. After finishing her meal, she was introduced to an Advocate, who will now work alongside her to complete the complicated steps that will hopefully lead to a new home.

Together, they will try every available avenue to get Nicole back on her feet, housed, and healthy in a dignified environment. It will not be an easy journey. We need your help.
