WLP Creates Program in Anticipation of Increased Evictions

Many of the women we serve are now worried about their housing security as the State of Massachusetts’s ban on evictions imposed during the early days of the coronavirus pandemic expired on October 17th. In response to the increase in women who will be turning to WLP for assistance after receiving an eviction notice, our Advocacy program has begun weekly Housing Workshops.

To accelerate the process, staff designed a new multi-station format where, in addition to receiving support with housing applications, guests can work on a variety of housing barriers. These include obtaining documents to secure IDs, accessing credit reports, building rental histories, developing payment plans, completing housing recertifications, and clearing rental arrearages and CORIs.

In the first three weeks since the program launched, the turnout has been amazing! Sixty-five women have attended the workshops, with 34 guests, half of whom are currently experiencing homelessness, beginning their housing search process for the first time. This is an opportunity for women who are in need of housing or housing stabilization to receive the comprehensive and personalized support that is a hallmark of WLP’s Advocacy department.

Our team is developing additional capacity to meet the pressing housing needs of our guests, both through our integrated service model and the recent addition of our clinical intern corps, with the goal of setting women on the path to permanent residence. We appreciate the generous support of the WLP community, which has helped us provide innovative and impactful programming like this throughout the pandemic.
